The Cinque Torri Tour is more than just a trek: it's a journey through the austere and refined Langa, where the stone of the towers, the scent of chestnut trees, and the light of the hills create a landscape that seems to belong to a slower, more authentic time.
The Cinque Torri Trail is one of those walks that seems to have been created more by the breath of history than by the hand of man.
Amid the hills, the trail links ancient medieval towers and small stone villages in a journey suspended between nature, silence, and memory. From Monastero Bormida to San Giorgio Scarampi, passing through Olmo Gentile, Roccaverano, and Vengore, each stretch of the route seems to reveal a different nuance of the most secret Langhe.
We begin at Monastero Bormida, where the four-arched medieval bridge spans the river like a threshold between different eras. The time-worn stones still retain the slow pace of merchants, pilgrims, and sentries who once watched over the valleys. From there, the trail gently climbs toward San Giorgio Scarampi, a small village of pale stone houses and profound silence, dominated by its square tower that emerges from the woods like an ancient lighthouse.
Continuing toward Olmo Gentile, the landscape opens up into a succession of rolling ridges, chestnut groves, and meadows suspended in the wind. Here, the Langa reveals its most intimate side: wild yet elegant, austere yet luminous. Trails pass through shady woods and unexpected clearings, from which the view stretches far, all the way to the Alps and the Ligurian Apennines on clear days.
Then Roccaverano appears, the highest point of the route, a stone balcony overlooking infinity. From the tower, the panorama stretches 360 degrees over the Bormida valleys, including silvery ravines, rolling fields, and hills that resemble a still sea. It's one of those places where the wind brings with it an ancient feeling, as if the towers still communicate with each other across the distance.
Finally we reach Vengore, perhaps the most poetic of the five towers: isolated, essential, immersed in the silence of the woods and abandoned strips.
