Castelletto Uzzone nestles in the forest of the high hills. In the upper Uzzone valley, on the border between Piedmont and Liguria, the landscape becomes wilder here, with the hills growing higher and the forests becoming denser.
Visitors to Castelletto Uzzone are greeted by the sight of the Palazzo Gaiero and the Renaissance-era chapel. A little further on, the vaulted arches of the historic centre welcome visitors into the compact village, with a layout designed to both protect and connect.
On the road to Prunetto, the Cascina Crocetta, an old farmhouse now owned by the local council, is home to ‘Banca del Fare’, a project dedicated to the revival of traditional building skills promoted by the Fondazione Matrice. Heading towards Scaletta Uzzona, the castle, the inn, and the fortified farmhouses tell the history of this border land, while the nearby hamlet of Carretto is a reminder of the influence of the Del Carretto noble family on this area.
The villages are surrounded by the shady beech forests, a place to cool off in summer, savouring the light filtered through the treetops.
