Bubbio is a place that appears both compact and upright. The houses rise up towards the ridge, the alleys squeeze their way through, and the stairways lead ever-upwards towards the surrounding hills. A place that blends in with the land, surrounded by a landscape moulded by vines.
It is located in the southern part of the Bormida Valley, in a sunny, agricultural area. The old centre retains its historic charm with arches, passageways, and hidden courtyards. The stone of the buildings tells an ancient story in a landscape of soft, gentle hillsides. A seamless transition between a dense mediaeval settlement and the countryside.
Within the village, there are a few stand-out landmarks. The Oratory of San Grato, with its octagonal shape, is a discreet yet distinctive presence. Nearby, the castle is a reminder of the village’s origins. Its mediaeval core, first documented in the 13th century, was severely damaged in 1639 and later transformed into the residential buildings which still stand today.
