The ruins of Gorzegno Castle stand on a hill southeast of the town. They were the fortified residence of the Del Carretto marquises and testify to their long-standing control of this stretch of the Bormida Valley.
The complex is now fragmented, but its location, its walls, and the nearby chapel of San Martino allow us to mentally reconstruct the ancient center of the noble power.
What to see
Along the climb, you'll find the remains of the curtain walls and buildings that once occupied the plateau. The varying heights and textures of the walls reveal the various construction phases and collapses that occurred over time.
The Chapel of San Martino is an integral part of the visit. The castle and place of worship formed a system linked to the marquises' residence and the community that lived at the foot of the fortification.
The site is exposed and features uneven terrain and unstable walls. Follow the indicated route, avoid restricted areas, and contact the municipality for updated information after heavy rainfall or maintenance work.
